Winners of the 2010 Arthur D. Montzka Young Artists Concerto Competition

nathanNathan Noh is a seventeen-year-old senior attending Adlai E. Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, IL. Nathan has been studying piano and music theory under the guidance of Brenda Huang since he was seven years old. He is also a member of a piano trio at Midwest Young Artists as part of their chamber music program. Nathan is performing today with the Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra as a winner of the 2010 Arthur D. Montzka Young Artists Concerto Competition. He also won the 2010 Steinway Young Artist Concerto Competition and will be performing with the Lake Forest Symphony Orchestra in March 2010. Nathan has performed solo pieces in the 2007-2008 Young Steinway Concert Series and on Kansas Public Radio in 2009, and will be performing live on WFMT’s Introductions in March 2010. In 2009, Nathan was a finalist in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Youth Auditions, was a semi-finalist in the 2009 International Institute for Young Musicians Piano Competition, and received second-place award in the Society of American Musicians Competition. Other awards include first place in the 2008 Sejong Music Competition, first place in the 2008 Chicago Area Music Teachers Association Roberta Savler Contest, alternate finalist in the 2008 Piano Arts National Biennial Piano Competition, finalist in the 2007 and 2008 West Suburban High School Concerto Competition, first place in the 2007 Chinese Fine Arts Music Competition, and second place in the 2006 Music Teachers National Association Junior Competition. Outside of music, Nathan enjoys reading and computer programming.

 

ryanRyan Murphy is 17 years old and a senior at Maine South High School in Park Ridge, Illinois. He is a violin student of Almita Vamos, Roland Vamos, and Marko Dreher and is a merit scholarship student in the Academy at the Music Institute of Chicago. Ryan is performing today as a winner of the Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra's 2010 Arthur D. Montzka Young Artists Competition. Recently, Ryan was the grand prize winner of the Olympic Finals of the Granquist Music Competition and soloed with that orchestra as a first-place winner of the Symphony of Oak Park and River Forest competition. Ryan also won the North Suburban Symphony competition and soloed with that orchestra. He won the junior Midwest Young Artists division of the Walgreens National Concerto Competition, second place in the senior division, and first place in the Music Teachers’ National Association Illinois Junior Strings Competition. Ryan has also been a finalist in the Skokie Valley Symphony Orchestra Young Artist Competition. He has performed solo works at various venues including the Chicago Cultural Center, the Art Institute of Chicago, and Nichols Hall. This year, Ryan was selected to participate in the Lennox International Young Artists Competition and the Corpus Christi International Competition for Strings, and he is an alternate for the Stulberg International String Competition. Ryan has performed in master classes for musicians such as Ilya Kaler, Yo Yo Ma, Alice Schoenfeld, and members of the Avalon and Vermeer quartets. As a chamber musician, Ryan’s groups have won the Rembrandt Chamber Music Competition, the Society of American Musicians chamber music competitions, and the Chicago National Chamber Music Competition, and they have been semifinalists at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. He has performed on National Public Radio’s “From the Top” and WFMT’s “Introductions”, and also in the Harris Theatre, the Chicago Cultural Center, Nichols Hall, the Chicago Art Institute, and the Houston Grand Opera House. During summers, Ryan has studied as a merit scholarship student at the Meadowmount School of Music in New York and the Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival in Vermont. He has also studied at the Okemo Young Artists Program.
