38th Annual Concert Season: 2014-2015

All concerts, except the Summer Concert in the Park, and The Many Moods of Music concerts, are held in the Boutell Memorial Concert Hall of the Music Building at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.

Program notes for the Fall Concert, the Montzka Memorial Concert, and the Spring Concert are available here shortly before the concert.

Summer Concert in the Park  

When: Thursday, June 26, 2014, 8:00 p.m.
Where: Hopkins Park Band Shell

The KSO will present its annual family-oriented free concert at the Dee Palmer Band Shell in DeKalb’s Hopkins Park.

The orchestra will perform a varied program with patriotic, popular, classical, and modern movie music:

  • The Star Spangled Banner
  • Overture to “Candide,” by Leonard Bernstein
  • Allegro, from Eine Kleine Nachtmusik,
    by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
  • “Morning” and “In the Hall of the Mountain King”
    from Peer Gynt Suite No. l, by Edvard Grieg
  • Trumpeter’s Lullaby, by Leroy Anderson
    Kevin Davis, trumpet soloist
  • Theme from “Mission Impossible,” by Lalo Schifrin

Family Fun Day 

When: Saturday, August 9, 2014
Where: Sycamore Community Park

The Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra’s Family Fun Day will be held at the Sycamore Community Park, 940 E. State Street in Sycamore. The event will feature a variety of activities, including a silent auction and raffle items for adults and children, live musical entertainment, a bouncy house, a climbing wall, face painting, a magician, the use of the park's tennis and volleyball courts, bags games, and horseshoe pits, and a reduced admission fee for the park's pool and golf.

Also available (to a limited number of diners), will be a gourmet picnic dinner.

Activities will start at 3:00 p.m., with a social hour at 5:30 p.m. and the picnic at 6:30 p.m.

More detailed information on this event, and on how to become a sponsor and how to obtain activity and dinner tickets in advance, can be found here. Tickets will also be available at the event (though the number of seats is limited for the dinner).

Fall Concert: The Hedgehog’s Dilemma   

When: Saturday, October 11, 2014, 7:30 p.m.
Where: NIU Boutell Memorial Concert Hall
There will be a free pre-concert lecture at 6:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall.

Halloween Concert

When: Tuesday, October 28, 2014, 5:30 p.m. & 7:30 p.m.
Where: NIU Boutell Memorial Concert Hall

The KSO will present its annual free concert of music with a
Halloween theme appropriate for children and adults. The 5:30
concert will be repeated at 7:30, and there will be trick-or-
treating in the building a half hour before the 5:30 concert.

The Many Moods of Music

When:

Friday, November 14, 2014, 10:00 a.m.

Where: Egyptian Theatre, DeKalb

Each year, the KSO presents a concert, not open to the general
public, that is specifically for students and their teachers invited
from elementary schools in our region.

The Many Moods of Music

When:

Saturday, November 15, 2014, 11:00 a.m.

Where: Egyptian Theatre, DeKalb

The November 14 children’s concert, with possible
modifications for a wider audience, will be presented to
families and the general public on November 15

 

Holiday Pops Concert: Winter Wonderland

When:

Friday, December 12, 2014, 7:00 p.m.

Where: NIU Boutell Memorial Concert Hall

Let the KSO warm your hearts with the music of the holiday
season. Many holiday favorites, including Haydn's Toy
Symphony and a seasonal sing-along, are part of this
traditional family concert. (Who knows, maybe the “Big Guy  
in Red” will make an appearance.)

Arthur D. Montzka Memorial Concert    

When:

Saturday, March 7, 2015, 7:30 p.m.

Where: NIU Boutell Memorial Concert Hall
There will be a free pre-concert lecture at 6:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall.

This concert will feature this year's winner of the Arthur D. Montzka Young Artists Concerto Competition.

  • Symphony No. 2, Op. 132 (“Mysterious Mountain"), by Alan Hovhaness
