37th Annual Concert Season: 2013-2014

All concerts, except the Summer Concert in the Park and the Children's Concert, are held in the Boutell Memorial Concert Hall of the Music Building of Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.

Program Notes for subscription concerts are available here shortly before each concert.

Summer Concert

When: Thursday, June 27, 2013, 8:00 p.m.
Where: Hopkins Park Band Shell

The KSO will present its annual family-oriented free concert at the band shell in DeKalb's Hopkins Park.

Fall Concert: The Chamber Effect

When: Saturday, October 5, 2013, 7:30 p.m.
Where: NIU Boutell Memorial Concert Hall
There will be a free pre-concert lecture at 6:30 p.m. in Room 173.

Halloween Concert

When: Wednesday, October 30, 2013
5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
Where: NIU Boutell Memorial Concert Hall

The KSO will present its annual free concert of music with a Halloween theme appropriate for children and adults. The 5:30 concert will be repeated at 7:30, and there will be trick-or-treating in the building a half hour before the 5:30 concert.

Children's Concert

When: Friday, November 15, 2013
Where: Egyptian Theatre, DeKalb

Each year, the KSO presents a concert, not open to the general public, that is specifically for 3rd-, 4th-, and 5th-grade students and their teachers from elementary schools in our region.

Holiday Pops Concert: Winter Wonderland

When: Friday, December 13, 2013, 7:00 p.m.
Where: NIU Boutell Memorial Concert Hall

Let the KSO warm your hearts with the music of the holiday season. Many holiday favorites, including Haydn's Toy Symphony and a seasonal sing-along, are part of this traditional family concert. (Who knows, maybe the “Big Guy in Red” will make an appearance.)

  • Festive Overture in A Major, Op. 96, by Dmitri Shostakovich
  • Selections featuring the Northern Illinois University Steel Band, including Tico Tico, Pan in A Minor, Flight of the Bumblebee, and Moto Perpetuo
  • Symphony No. 10 in E minor, Op. 93, by Dmitri Shostakovich
