Winter 2010
Happy New Year, KSA Members!
"Baby, it's COLD outside," so we hope that news of the Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra's and Symphony Associates' doings will warm you. As has become our custom, in September KSA kicked off the year with a delightful musicale at Shirley Nehring’s home. This event coincides with our annual membership campaign and again this year KSA has 100 members. Thank you!
KSO had a busy fall which included its opening concert, two free concerts on Halloween Eve, the annual Children’s Concert provided to school children throughout the county, and the ever-popular Holiday Pops Concert. This year, with the exception of the Children’s Concert, all concerts are being performed in NIU’s Boutell Memorial Concert Hall. This has proven to be a wonderful facility to showcase our award-winning orchestra.
The KSO Halloween Concert was a new undertaking for the orchestra. The NIU student orchestra had, in previous years, provided a delightful concert for the community on Halloween Eve, but had to give up that venture. KSO stepped into the void and presented two lively concerts (5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.). Both concerts saw large audiences enjoy the music, marvel at the ingenuity of our costumed orchestra (and KSO Board members), and take home holiday treats.
The annual KSO Children's Concert, provided for the county’s school children was moved from spring to fall this year to better accommodate school schedules. This concert is always a fun learning experience for the children with lively and engaging commentary by conductor Linc Smelser.
As usual, there was a full house for the KSO Holiday Pops Concert. Boutell Hall was beautifully decorated and the orchestra’s selections put everyone in a festive mood.
After a winter hiatus, the KSO returns to Boutell Hall on Sunday, February 28, at 3:00 p.m., with a concert featuring the winners of the Arthur D. Montzka Young Artists Concerto Competition. This year’s winners are two 17-year-olds: Ryan Murphy, violin, from Park Ridge; and Nathan Noh, piano, from Lincholnshire. Ryan will perform the first movement of Sibelius's Concerto in D Minor and Nathan will perform the first movement of Tchaikovsky's Concerto in Bb Minor. Hearing these young artists is always awe-inspiring. We hope you’ll be able to join us.
The final concert of the season will take place Saturday, May 1, at 7:30 p.m., also in Boutell Hall. Titled, The Romance of Spring, it will feature well-known compositions by Mozart, Offenbach, and Tchaikovsky. Not to be missed!
Cheers and see you at the concerts!
