Young Artists Competition Winner
Violinist, Kevin Hu, age 15
Kevin Hu is the winner of the Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra's 2009 Arthur D. Montzka Young Artists Concerto Competition He is a sophomore at Naperville Central High School and currently studies with Cyrus Forough at the Music Institute of Chicago.
In 2009, Kevin was co-winner in the Walgreen National Concerto Competition Senior String Category, was a finalist in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Young Artists Auditions, and placed fourth at the Blount-Slawson National Young Artists Competition. In addition, Kevin guest-soloed with the West Suburban, the Elmhurst, and the DuPage Symphony Orchestras after winning their concerto competitions. Kevin was also the winner in the Violin Intermediate Division and Violin Senior Division of Society of the American Musicians Competitions.
Kevin is the concertmaster of the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra and the CYSO Encore Chamber Orchestra, and he has been a chamber musician for five years. He has advanced to the semifinals of the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, has been featured on "From the Top", an NPR showcase of talented pre-college musicians, and was named a 2007 Rembrandt Young Artist after winning the Rembrandt Chamber Music Competition. His piano trio has been invited to play at the Ravinia Music Festival and Chicago's Day of Music at Symphony Center, and they have performed with Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk-Road Ensemble.
Aside from music, Kevin enjoys math and sciences, and he is the co-captain of his school's math team and a varsity member of science and engineering teams. Kevin qualified for the USA Math Olympiad in 2007 and 2009 and was a member of the 2009 USA Math Olympiad Summer Program's Red Group, the top 22 high school freshmen in the country.
Runners-up in this year's Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra's ADM Young Artists Concerto Competition are violinist Laura Park of Palatine, and violist Jaimie Sachay of DeKalb.
