    ARTHUR D. MONTZKA 2008 YOUNG ARTISTS CONCERTO COMPETITION


  • Open to instrumentalists 18 years of age and younger as of December 1, 2007 who live in Illinois within a 75 mile radius of DeKalb, IL.

  • The winner of the competition will perform with the Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra at the Northern Illinois University Boutell Concert Hall, DeKalb, Illinois, on Sunday, March 2, 2008, 3:00 pm.

  • The winner of the competition will receive $350 for the performance.

  • Repertoire requirements: one or more movements of a solo concerto or an appropriate one-movement composition with orchestral accompaniment, the total performance time not to exceed twenty minutes.

  • Each contestant's application must include:
    1. An audio cassette or CD recording of the contestant's performance with accompaniment of the selected work.
    2. A 5x7 publicity photograph.
    3. A biography (no resumes).
    4. A non-refundable $35.00 entry fee. Make check payable to the Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra.

  • The selected work should not be a piece which has been played in the last three years:
    2007: Benjamin Lash
    Christine Murphy
    Hindemith: Concerto for Cello, 1940
    Bizet: Carmen Fantasy for Flute
    2006: Kevin Korda Gershwin Rhapsody in Blue
    2005: Shawn Moore Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in E Minor, Op. 64


  • All applications must be postmarked no later than November 1, 2007. Incomplete applications will be disqualified.

  • The winner of the competition will rehearse with the Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra on selected Monday evenings prior to the March 2, 2008 concert and at the 1:00 pm dress rehearsal preceding the 3:00 pm concert.

  • Finalists may be asked to perform for the Young Artists Selection Committee.

The Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1976, is a non-profit institution under the statutes of the state of Illinois. Its programs are enhanced by nationally known guest conductors and soloists from the Sycamore-DeKalb area. The orchestra’s concerts and policies are administered through the efforts of its Music Director, Linc Smelser, the Orchestra Players Committee, and a fifteen-member Board of Directors composed of citizens from the community.
