Principal Viola
Lynn Slater began playing violin in grade school and eventually switched to viola at Elgin High School where she studied privately with Jean Hove. After graduating and some junior college, Lynn married, moved to central Illinois and started a family, but always kept playing in various local community and college orchestras, pit orchestras, and churches. Lynn and husband, Dave, then moved back to this area 19 years ago.
Lynn is the coordinator of admissions and public relations for the School of Music at Northern Illinois University. She works with all incoming students on both the undergraduate and graduate level and assists them in their goal to becoming music majors - from their first contact to the university to their actual entrance. She keeps in contact with alumni and donors as well as coordinates all public relations for the School of Music.
Lynn is also a freelance liturgical musician. She is active in the Newman Catholic Student Center choir where she plays viola and sings on Sundays. She is the principal violist for the Diocese of Rockford and is privileged to play for many liturgical events in the diocese. Lynn is a member of Still Pointe, an ensemble that has been to the Holy Land three times and also to Rome on the last trip, where concerts were performed at different sites.
Lynn and her husband, Dave, have three children, Jenny (husband Jim), Erin, and John. All are grown and off on their own. They also have one beautiful grandson, Dean.
